Ikea VINK CD Holder Project

Here's an Ikea Hack project. I used some Ikea Vink CD holders and created a rack to hold them. The two units will hold a total of 400 CDs in twenty separate racks (if Ikea ever gets some more in).

Bare wood stands

1) Two made - I made two stands using standard pine 2" x 10" stock. They stand 65" high with a 12" base. The top was mitered off and all edges rounded off with 1/4" round-over bit. Small holes around the knotholes were then puttied over and the entire assembly sanded.

Rabbeted base joint

2) Solid base - the base was 12" long with a dado to receive the upright that was glued in with Elmer's Carpenter wood glue and reinforced with #12 x 3" wood screws.

The finish is two coats of Minwax Polyshades with a final coat of Johnson's paste wax.

Screwed and glued and MDF foot pads

3) Padded - some foot pads of MDF were added. You can also see the 3" woodscrews reinforcing the joint.

Used square to layout screw-eye positions

4) Mark it - a small square was used to layout the cup hooks. I marked the square with some tape so I didn't have to read the size each time. I located the cup hooks 7" apart vertically so each rack would fit with an allowance for enough room to take it off. They are about 6 1/4" apart - make sure they will fit between the wires of the VINK racks.

Small wood blocks added

5) Level-headed - I had to add some small blocks (about 3/4") thick to keep the racks hanging level. I used hot glue to tack the block on before drilling and screwing them on with #8 x 1 1/4" screws.

Without the blocks, the racks would lean slightly downward and the CDs had a tendency to slide out. The cup hooks were 3/4" brass plated steel. Check the prices. At Lowes, they had 3/4"e; cup hooks in three different packs - two solid brass for .98¢, 6 steel for .98¢ and 50 for $4 .

Marked CD rack

6) Marked - here's the rack hung on the cup hook. Note the little ink spot on the rack to help me line up the rack. It makes it easier to keep the racks aligned.

7) Hanging straight - here's a rack hanging from the cup hooks ready for CDs.

Two stands awaiting racks

8) Two to go - here's two stands ready for their racks. While they don't look too stable, when full of CDs they are nice and steady.

Final appearance

9) Done - here's a stand full of CDs. Fully loaded there's room for 160 CDs. I'm hoping to find two more CD racks to fill out the stand. Ikea seems to have discontinued them.

Note the Ikea Molger stool next to the stand.

13) Construction Notes: All the wood used was standard construction 2x10s. All minor knots, dents and other defects were filled in with wood putty. I used an orbital sander to sand it all down and then used two coats of Minwax Polyshades brushed on and wiped off with one coat of paste wax over that.
